The Liverpool Echo Reported

This is the story of Mrs. Mabel Yates, and how American stage and screen stars Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy became her fairy godmothers. Mr.s Yates is sixty-nine. She has spent many years in hospital. Almost from childhood she has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. Ten years ago a shop blind fell on her. Four years ago she was in a tram accident. And now paralysis has come to scourge her. Mrs. Yates has had two great sources of happiness—her job as a music teacher and watching Laurel and Hardy films. She has followed Laurel and Hardy from the earliest slapstick shorts. Last week, she heard that Laurel and Hardy were appearing personally at the Empire, Liverpool, but for three years she has not been able to move further than her home in Hartington Road, Liverpool. So she wrote and wished them luck, and said she was sorry she could not see them. Back came a letter asking her to attend on Saturday afternoon, and a taxi with an attendant called for her. After the show Mrs. Yakes said: "God bless them for this kindness." The two comedians themselves were reluctant to discuss their sympathetic gesture.

Funny you should mention Ulverston. Just back from visiting there today—quite a turn out. I was presented to the folks at the Coronation Hall and was given a copy of my Birth Certificate on the Balcony outside. A wonderful time. Was thrilled to death.
